This review was conducted on a pre-publication manuscript of What I Would Tell My Younger Self. It was received after the BookLife review, when revisions prompted by that earlier professional review were already underway. BlueInk's independent observations reinforced several of the concerns identified by BookLife and confirmed the need to continue strengthening the manuscript. The final edition reflects additional revisions made after considering both reviews.
Review Highlights
BlueInk recognized the personal and reflective nature of the book and its effort to use experiences from a lifetime to share lessons with readers.
The review acknowledged the value of the book's personal stories and the perspective that comes from looking back upon life's choices and experiences from the reflective years.
At the same time, BlueInk questioned aspects of the manuscript's presentation of its lessons. Those observations were particularly valuable because several were consistent with concerns already raised by BookLife and with revisions that were underway.
What I Learned From the Review
The BookLife review had already prompted a closer examination of repetition, the balance between stories and lessons, and whether the conversations were being allowed to communicate their meaning without unnecessary additional explanation.
BlueInk's review was valuable because an independent professional reviewer reinforced several of those concerns.
That reinforcement mattered. An observation from one reviewer can sometimes reflect an individual preference. When another independent reviewer identifies a similar issue, however, it deserves greater attention.
BlueInk therefore provided additional reason to continue the revisions already underway and to examine the manuscript more broadly for other places where the same concerns might exist.
What Changed
The revision process continued after receiving the BlueInk review, building upon the changes prompted by BookLife and applying them more consistently throughout the manuscript.
Among the improvements made to the final edition were:
Further reducing repetition where a story or conversation had already communicated the lesson effectively.
Allowing the personal stories and experiences to carry more of the message, rather than explaining a lesson again after it had already been demonstrated.
Strengthening the conversational voice between the older and younger selves so that the book remained reflective rather than unnecessarily instructional.
Examining familiar lessons more critically, with greater emphasis on the experiences and perspective that gave those lessons personal meaning.
Improving consistency throughout the manuscript, so that revisions prompted by concerns found in particular passages were considered wherever similar issues appeared elsewhere in the book.
A Final Comment
The BlueInk review arrived at an important point in the development of the manuscript.
BookLife had already caused me to reconsider several aspects of the book and begin making revisions. BlueInk provided something equally valuable: independent confirmation that those concerns deserved attention.
That is one of the reasons multiple professional reviews were sought before publication. Their purpose was not simply to accumulate favorable quotations. Each review provided another independent perspective from which to reconsider the manuscript.
When reviewers agreed, I paid particular attention. When they differed, I had to decide which observations would make the book stronger while preserving the purpose and voice I wanted it to have.
BlueInk reinforced the need for the revisions already underway and encouraged me to carry them further.
