BookLife Review Comments
Submitted for Review: July 27, 2026
This review was conducted on a pre-publication manuscript of What I Would Tell My Younger Self. The professional reviews were sought in part to identify opportunities to strengthen the manuscript before publication. The final edition reflects revisions made after considering the reviewers' observations.
Review Highlights
BookLife recognized the reflective and personal nature of the book and its effort to share lessons accumulated through a lifetime of experience.
Among its observations, BookLife wrote:
“Readers will come away feeling the full force of a life well-lived.”
The review also identified qualities in the book's conversational approach and its emphasis on lessons involving character, relationships, responsibility, perspective, and the choices that shape a life.
What I Learned From the Review
The purpose of seeking professional reviews before publication was not simply to collect favorable comments. It was also to learn where the manuscript could be improved.
BookLife's review helped reinforce the importance of allowing the stories and conversations to carry the lessons naturally, while avoiding unnecessary repetition or explanation after a point had already been made.
It also encouraged a closer examination of the balance between the individual lessons and the larger conversation running throughout the book.
What Changed
The manuscript was subsequently reviewed and revised with those observations in mind.
Among the improvements made to the final edition were:
Reducing repetition where a lesson had already been communicated effectively through the conversation or story.
Strengthening the conversational voice between the older and younger selves so that the book remained reflective rather than instructional.
Improving the flow between stories and lessons, allowing the reader more opportunity to draw meaning from the experience being shared.
Refining passages throughout the manuscript where additional explanation interrupted the natural rhythm of the conversation.
Strengthening the overall consistency of the book so that its individual lessons contributed more naturally to its larger purpose.
A Final Comment
Professional reviews were requested before publication because I wanted the manuscript challenged before asking readers to spend their time with it.
I was pleased by the favorable observations in the BookLife review, but the criticism was equally valuable. The purpose was never to produce a manuscript that every reviewer would praise. It was to listen carefully, decide which observations could make the book better, and make those changes before publication.
The book available today is therefore not precisely the manuscript BookLife reviewed.
It is a better book because BookLife reviewed it.
